Scattered trees within 0.5 km of campus associated with reduced depression in students
Examining multiple buffer distances around university campuses across 90 Chinese campuses, Yang et al. (2022) found that the presence of scattered trees (but not dense trees, bush scrub, or low plants) within 0.5 km of campus was associated with lower depression scores. Access to water features and street intersections at larger radii also showed protective associations.
Yang et al. (2022) focused on the environments within a 0.5 km, 1 km, and 2.5 km buffer of the campus and students' depression symptoms, indicating that campus neighborhoods with scattered trees (0.5 km), access to water (0.5, 1.0, and 2.5 km), and increased street intersections (1.0 and 2.5 km) were associated with decreased depression.
